Throughout the book, consideration is given as to how best to combine the embellished pieces with machine stitching. They will, of course, stand as lovely fabrics in their own right but the layering effect of stitch creates really special textile art. The embellished pieces make ideal backgrounds, as the piece on the right shows. This bag was built up from walnut-inked felt with silk fibres and manipulated chiffon. This was used as a background for stitched motifs, based on the Great Mosque at Cordoba. The book also looks briefly at ways of building up embellished embroideries from designs or ideas. Stitching can become a part of a complex surface, as shown below. It can be used with felts to highlight a design. Combined with couching - a great technique for the embellisher - it can be made into straps which are wonderful for books, or can be built up into an exciting embroidery. ![]() ![]() |
